Single person discount application

There is a 25% discount if only one adult lives in a home.

Council Tax is usually based on two adults (aged 18 or over) living in a property. If only one adult lives there, you can get 25% off your council tax. This is called a single person discount.

You can be considered for this discount if:

  • You live on your own
  • If another adult leaves and you now live alone

You live with someone who does not count

Some people do not count as adults for council tax. They are called disregarded people. If you live with only disregarded people, you can still apply for a 25% discount.

There are online forms for each type of disregard. You must fill in the right form for the person who does not count.

Disregarded people include:

  • Full-time students
    • Please complete the student and student nurses discount form
  • Young people aged 18 or 19 who have recently left education
    • Please complete the school or college leaver discount form
  • People with a severe mental impairment

When you cannot get the discount

You cannot get the discount if two or more adults live in the home.

  • If someone has recently moved out of the property, we will need a forwarding address for them
